If - The Pat Roach Story - Pat Roach with Shirley Thompson

If - Pat Roach cover
For the first time, wrestler-turned-film-and-television actor Pat Roach tells his unique life story, to his co-writer Shirley Thompson. The book traces Pat's life, from poverty-stricken childhood to famous celebrity, it reveals 'the man behind the image', and covers his considerable achievements in the fields of sport, film and television.

Based on Pat's favourite poem Kipling's If, The book includes many rare photographs and film stills from his personal collection. There are also many shots from the popular television series of Auf Wiedersehen Pet and of his character 'Bomber'.

The range of contributors and subjects is extremely diverse, and includes Harrison Ford, Sean Connery, Ryan O'Neal, Steven Spielberg, Martin Shaw, Sheila White, Vic Armstrong, Stanley Kubrick's family and his former personal assistant, Anthony Frewin; various other actors, directors, photographers, museum curators, entrepreneurs, stunt men, fans, film crew and sports personalities.

"As an avid reader of biographies, I found this a thoroughly engrossing read. Written in a chatty, conversational style that really involves the reader, just for once we get an image of the real man behind the myth. Packed with anecdotal and often highly amusing tales involving our area, it also includes stories peopled with such characters as Harrison Ford, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Stephen Spielberg and so on. We also get a never-before seen glimpse of the wrestling world as well as a few delightful insights into life as Bomber from "Auf Wiedersehen Pet".

Incidentally, I have no vested interest in the subject, only having met Pat Roach once but, if you buy only one biography this year, I urge you to make it "If"
