The Life of William Hutton - Introduction by Carl Chinn

the life of william hutton cover
William Hutton first visited Birmingham in 1741 as a runaway apprentice and returned to live in the City permanently in 1751 when he rented a shop at No. 6 Bull Street for a shilling a week. From humble beginnings in Birmingham, he developed a book binding and publishing business and published the first history of Birmingham in 1781. His autobiography is a fascinating insight into the Birmingham riots in 1791 and records his life's work in developing business in Birmingham and his walking exploits which took him as far as Hadrian's Wall in 1801 at the age of 79.
