John
Austin has been researching Merevale Church and the Abbey for over ten
years. The church, which is the Gate Chapel of Merevale Abbey (1148),
contains the most important Cistercian stained glass in the British Isles,
including the famous Jesse window. The medieval and nineteenth-century
glass is described in great detail with over 120 pieces listed in the
East Window alone. There are chapters on how medieval stained glass was
made and in iconography of Jesse windows. The splendid colour plates of
all the stained glass are from the RCHME. |
