Early
records reveal about fifty forms of the name WALSALL, although the Domesday
Book (1086 AD) strangely makes no mention of the town, yet other smaller
places like Bloxwich are noted. The earliest recorded spelling takes
the form of Walesho (1004 AD) and it is not until 1484 that we meet
the name in its present form. The derivation is considered by some as
"the hall (abode) of the Welsh (or stranger)", by others as
"the abode in the woods" (and remember that forests were widespread
at the time), and yet again "the hall of Wealh", probably
the name of a chieftain.
With over 400 photographs this book covers all aspects of Walsall's
history and is a fascinating insight into the areas past.
