Gwendolen
Freeman is a distinguished writer and journalist whose published
works have spanned six decades. Granddaughter of a minor artist
and daughter of a teacher and journalist, Gwen was born at Ealing
and educated at Tiffin Girls' school, Kingston upon Thames. She
won an Emily Davies scholarship to Girton College, Cambridge where
she graduated English Tripos, B.A. First Class. Her career commenced
with an appointment as the first Woman's Page Editor for The Birmingham
Post which was followed in the war years as P.R.O. for the Ministry
of Labour (Midlands Division). After the war she joined the staff
of The Spectator and then freelanced for the national press including
The Daily Telegraph, The Guardian and The Times Literary Supplement.
She still writes occasional pieces for a considerable number of
regional newspapers. Her 19 published books to date include biography,
autobiography and social issues (non fiction) and poetry and novels
(fiction).
