In 1790, there were ten public houses in Brampton, but by 1845 this number had grown to well over fifty, and later, to 63. However, following the end of the 19th Century, the number of public houses in Brampton had fallen back to that which had existed 100 years previously.

Illustrated in full colour, this book sets out the reasons for this sudden mushrooming of new public houses, and why, some fifty years later their number declined, almost as rapidly as they had grown.
