Over
several decades, Birmingham Central Library has commissioned leading photographers
to record the city and its diverse communities. This remarkable book brings
this work together for the first time in a sequence of picture essays
ranging from Vanley Burkes astute documentation of the Afro-Caribbean
community to Tom Merilions extraordinary vision of the cityscape
as though it were an architects model. The book is published to
coincide with Birminghams bid to become European Capital of Culture
in 2008, and includes work specially commissioned for the bid.
These portrayals of Birmingham show a city recreating itself, both in
terms of concrete, bricks and mortar, and in terms of a thriving multi-cultural
population. Together, these remarkable photographs create a colourful
and enjoyable evocation of a city and its people: a world city.
